About me

During my life I`ve lived abroad in 3 countries (Greece, England and Spain), only to realise that there`s no place like home! So in 2008 after I graduated from the University of Sussex in England and got my BSc in Computer Science, I moved back to Cyprus and got a nice little flat here, where I can enjoy the awesomeness of this island. Now I got a full time job and studying for my masters at the University of Cyprus, which means that I am leading a quiet life…most of the time.  What do I do?

I’m a geek

To put a long story short, I am a major computer geek; one of the biggest if I dare say. I got into hardcore programming at the age of 13, which is something that usually makes people wide-eyed when they find out. I was also a hardcore multi-play gamer, so by the age of 15 I started getting into conversions/modifications for games, and soon after into code of games that had their source code released.  I like programming, computer games, web development, technology,  movies and TV series and I do not like clubbing, cars, cool clothing, etc, which pretty much puts me in the geek category.

I’m a gamer

I play A LOT of multi-player computer games.  I’ve been doing this all my life.  Although I haven’t followed a career into game development, multi-player gaming is probably the reason I got into programing in the first place.  I played most first person shooters from the time of Doom, then Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior, to all Quake releases including Quake 3 for which I attended international competitions, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, Left 4 Dead (a lot of it!) and lots of others.  I also played strategy games, some games in the Command & Conquer series and spent a good 4 years playing Lineage 2.  I love it.  I could go on a huge rant why I find gaming so enjoyable and rewarding.  Actually you’ll most probably find some articles about this in the blog.

I’m the founder of Gamers-Cy

Gamers-Cy was created in 2000 in order to promote and expand the gaming community of Cyprus.  We host game servers, a web portal of interaction for gamers and organize gaming events and tournaments.  Although I’m not the only founder, as it was a collaborative effort of the few hardcore gamers we had back then, unfortunately I’m the only one still involved with this, and the community has risen from the handful that we were into thousands.

I’m a freelancer IT consultant / web developer

I don’t take that many projects as my full-time job, studies and Gamers-Cy do not leave me with too much spare time, but from time to time I do take one or two, making a bit of extra cash.  You would most probably expect me to say this as “everyone is a web developer nowadays”, but there’s a difference between web development companies, the few good freelancers and the huge number of amateurs that are good at talking but terrible at developing.  With 10+ years of experience in PHP and a number of CMS, as well as having worked in one of the major web development firms in Cyprus, I consider myself to be in the good freelancers section.

I’m an atheist

What I go by is the idea that I do not know anything about His existence, if He exists.  We do not know everything, and surely there are things that we can not understand and could be credited to the existence of a superior life force, should that be called God, Gods, aliens or pizza.  I find the idea of believing in an invisible, immaterial life force that watches everything we do, cares about it and can punish us or reward us for it absurd.  For that reason, I live by the assumption that there is no God and I believe that religion is harmful to society.
