Gamers-Cy

Gamers-Cy is back!

Looking back till 2004 that I brought down Gamers-Cy for redesigning I can find a handful of excuses for why I never finished it; one excuse for its own time period.  The truth of the matter is that there are really just excuses but not a single valid reason.

Today I relaunched the site expecting this to be the beginning of a more professional effort for creating something bigger out of gaming.  I have a fascination for gaming and for that since my teenage years I dedicated a lot of effort into creating and maintaining an environment where everyone could enjoy it for free.  This effort was not mine alone, but was met and supported by many enthusiasts within the community that had the power and will to offer.

We are no longer teenagers.  We are adults, professionals in many fields such as computer science, marketing and law and our passion for gaming has never disappeared.   On this foundation we hereby launch today we hope to expand to build a gamer’s heaven.

Dota tourney success

The DotA tourney this past Sunday we organized on behalf of Gamers-Cy was a great success.  This was more of a test tournament to see how enthusiastic the DotA scene is regarding competitions, but even with only 2 weeks allowed for registration and low cash prizes we still had 7 teams fighting it out.  Congratulations to FAIL, CPNJ and SR for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively.  If you wish to see the matches you can download the replays.  Thanks to everyone who participated and for all your nice words regarding the quality of the tourney.

Dota competition this Sunday

Our first DotA competition is taking place this Sunday 7th of March at KINX Gaming Lounge in Nicosia.  It will be 5v5 -cm mode and all the money received from entrance fees will be awarded as prizes.  If anyone reading this is interested you can read more information and the rules at Gamers-Cy web-site.  Registration finishes on Thursday.

Sponsoring our ESWC qualifier

Well, for the past 2 weeks I`ve been looking for potential sponsors for our upcoming ESWC qualifier. This year is something that we do not want to miss. ESWC has a fine pool of games: Counter Strike, Fifa 10, Trackmania Nations, Street Fighter 4, Need for speed: Shift and possibly Quake Live and DotA. Their grand final will take place in Disney Land / Paris (yes players will be accommodated in hotels inside Disney Land :) ). However we estimate the whole event to cost us around 20,000 euro, which is an amount quite challenging to get from potential sponsors, the way gaming is look down in Cyprus. If anyone reading this has any idea, or is a connected with an organization that might be willing to sponsor then go ahead and let me know. One thing is for sure, from now on we will be pushing harder to project the image of our community, so next time, when we talk about gaming and Gamers-Cy, people will know what`s happening!

KINX Closed

A lot of people have been asking me lately why KINX has closed.  All the rhumors about maintenance or renovation, or whatever for that case are wrong, so take them lightly.  The real reason is that Lambros has terminated his partnership with the previous owners of G-Spot and by legal enforcement KINX should remain closed until all legal procedures are done.   As a matter of fact, if you see KINX open next week then bare in mind that it is illegal and it won’t stand long.

Dota Competition. Should we?

Since I started gaming again after friends showed me DotA, I’ve been seeing more and more people getting addicted to it.  We’ve reached a point where dota players are so many that a competition would be nice.  About time we made a competition for a game other than CS imo.  We’re thinking about it tho…maybe early summer when students come back to Cyprus.

Changing the rules for in-game administration

There are 2 myths widely believed regarding what the job of in-game admins is:

  1. To ensure that all people who missbehave in any manner are denied access to our game servers, thus keeping the game servers for the part of the community that knows how to behave and show respect.
  2. To show and teach gamers how they should behave and punish those who refuse to learn.

Both are incorrect.  About 10 days ago I made some big changes to the list of in-game admins for Gamers-Cy’s Counter Strike servers.  A lot of admins that went inactive or just wouldn’t cut it for the position were removed and I added a few more under a trial period.  I then gathered everyone and over coffee gave them some directions as to how they should be administrating when they are in game.

Possibly the most discussed issue of what I said is that I demanded from them to ban anyone without hesitation whenever he or she gives them a reason, even if that reason is something as small as a single line of light swearing.  I also demanded that noone hands out bans that are longer than 4 days each.  The result was that over the last 10 days a total of 34 bans were made with the average ban duration being 26 hours and 41 minutes.

What I have been asked numerous times over the last 10 days is why did I decide on this course of action?  The reason for that is that I believe that in-game admins are not there for the 2 reasons that people believe so, that I gave above.  In a small community, of a small country such as Cyprus where everyone knows everyone, we are not here to be picky and choose our market, rather than we are here to serve and allow everyone to enjoy high-quality, professional gaming services for free.  Having said that in arguement of why we are not handing out permanent bans to people, the problem comes down to being able to provide these high-quality services while still allowing access to to people that interfere with our quality.  There is no doubt obviously that someone that cheats or constantly swears does not allow other players to enjoy their game to full extend.  This is why I decided to flood people with temporary bans of small duration.  In-game admins are not here to teach “bad people” what their families and teachers failed to do so, but are here to show people that we don’t care who or what you are in your life outside the game, but when you are using our services then we demand a certain set of manners and respect to other gamers that will allow everyone to equally enjoy the game.  What I expect from this is that in the long-run, after all these “bad people” have been given temporary bans a few times, most of them will learn to control themselves while in our servers.

Yet another site design

mougiasnew

I got in my hands yesterday yet another site design that could potentially end up being our new web site.  There is nothing complicated about it and even though personally I prefer the last design we worked on with my designer I understand that in this business simplicity and usability are the keys.  I think with some changes to this draft we can give gamers a very easy to use and learn to use community portal.  They have already been given a taste of a similar design being put into action for the web-site of Kinx Gaming (http://www.kinxgaming.com).
